Sorry – didn’t blog in December because I was working on another unicorn. A blog reader pointed me to a 2008 Mercedes S600 for $22,998. A bargain V-12, with night vision, auto cruise control, and every feature imaginable. I paid almost $900 to transfer in from Las Vegas. Been waiting….and yesterday CarMax Dulles Sales Manager informs me THEY ACCIDENTALLY FORGOT TO RECEIVE IT PROPERLY, TRANSFERRED IT TO OHIO, AND SOLD IT!!! I don’t believe it for a second. This also happened to a 2014 BMW 550i that was highly optioned and $5,000 below comps. The sales manager’s email suggested he wanted to offer a “potential solution” but haven’t heard from him since. Welcome thoughts from readers on how best to work this with CarMax – there have only been three S600’s offered by CarMax in the last two years. May be awhile until another comes in. There is a 2010 on Autotrader…..maybe CarMax should buy it for me?
Wow, that seems like complete incompetence coming from Carmax. Sorry, Chris!
I remember seeing that exact S600 too. Such a cool car.
I very much doubt you will leave this arbitration adequately satisfied. I reckon they will offer you some sort of low-dollar credit off another vehicle of your choosing…
What a bummer. Reminds me of the time I had a 2008 E63 wagon sold out of my hands by another large, no-haggle dealer group. It was only $20k and was under deposit to boot!
Perhaps I will point them to similar cars and ask them to buy one for me? Ask for the next S600 they buy at lower price? Oddly, they mistakenly shipped an S6 (V-10) from Henderson to Dulles at the same time, thinking I wanted it. That S6 ended up in Cleveland and sold there. Still not convinced this S600 is gone. Will walk the lot when I get back tomorrow.
Baloney. A friend of the dealer that snatched it convinced him to do something hinky with the transfer. I think the question for you now is, do you want to burn your bridges with CarMax and raise a stink about it?
Hey Scott. Embarrassed how far behind I was on comments! Yeah, I was getting smarly with CarMax but I bought a subscription to Carfax and confirmed the car was sold at auction. Keeping an eye on my latest S600 find.
