Got a number of unusual or interesting CarMax unicorns piling up in my saved list and thought I should share a quick post to get them on the blog. Most, but not all, are enthusiast cars. Some are just…different. Your call. Here we go.
Start with a car I’d actually own – a 2014 Jaguar XF Supercharged. Decent price, 470hp supercharged V-8, two-owner car found here in Irvine California. Only five-years old and a good candidate for MaxCare.
Another unicorn I’d own – and one I didn’t know existed. A 2017 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400. Nearly new, 400hp 3.0 liter six-cylinder coupe. See, I don’t only cover V-8’s! One-owner car here in Wichita, Kansas. This is a really sweet deal. A single-owner, 11 year-old Audi S5 with only 17,000 miles. Not terribly high horsepower at 354 from the 4.2l V-8. But throaty and fast. Like a German Mustang GT? It’s here in Kenner, Louisiana.
Not a car I’d own, but these big ole V-8 Cadillacs still have a following. And some even like the goofy fake convertible roof, which I will never understand. This 12 year-old, three-owner accident free DTS has really low miles and can be found here in Sacramento, California. (Too bad CarMax cameraman couldn’t close the hood before the photo shoot?). For just $8,000 more than the Cadillac you can have this sweet 2012 BMW 750 Li. Hard to believe an eight-year old, twin-turbo 400hp V-8 powered luxury German car can be had for a hair under $20,000.  MaxCare isn’t cheap, but may be worth it to “drive rich” in this long wheel base autobahn cruiser. It’s here in Irvine, California.
There’s something cute about this pristine 11 year-old old-fashioned economy sedan. Yeah, it’s from the defunct Saturn brand of GM and maybe that’s a little unicornish (?) in itself. It’s a one-owner car with very low miles and a low output four-cylinder. And a low price. Less than $10,000! Green over tan with a nice little gold pinstripe. Makes me yearn for the 80’s. This car is here in Boynton Beach, Florida.
Last but not least, an old school convertible sports car with a 2.2l four cylinder making 237 hp mated to a six-speed manual transmission. A 12 year old gem that’s a bit pricey at $28,998 but CarMax only carries a handful yearly. The S2000 was sold through 2009 in the US. This triple black, two-owner car is here in Ontario, California.Â
Some real gems. That Audi is astounding, but MaxCare for it can’t be cheap. That Honda is absurdly priced. For the less money, you can get a new 2020 MX-5, with a factory warranty, that’s a better car in every way.
Agree on the Honda. That said, $27k seems to be the norm for comps on Autotrader. I wouldn’t pay that much – and not just because I don’t fit. Think there’s better value out there for that price.
S2000’s will be insanely collectible on the future. 28k is high, but low mileage S2ks are selling for above sticker money anymore.
Thanks, Hans. When they were new I wanted one….but my left arm was squeezed against the door and my right shoulder against the passenger. Too small. Was surprised researching prices in response to Craig’s comment how high resale prices are! Great car though. I did see only 800 or so 2009’s were sold – should be on the lookout for those!
