How Will They Stay In Business? 24 Hour Test Drives and 30 Day Return!

The word is out and several of you have written me about this. Seems too good to be true. But it is. I’ve booked my first 24 hour test drive for a Mercedes I have inbound. The test drive is limited to 150 miles. (The car will do 186 mph. Would be a hoot to max out mileage in 45-50 minutes!) And as I’ve written before, the customer has the most leverage to have repairs done that even MaxCare doesn’t cover during the return period. Plenty of time to get a PPO. Enjoy.

  1. I visited a CarMax on the weekend before Thanksgiving. The sales rep said that they were many people in that day to buy a car before they drove to see their families for T-Day, and that a decent number of them would return the car shortly thereafter. Sad.

    1. I know. And my rep said Carmax is busting folks doing solo test drives for the sole purpose of recording burnouts and drifting. That ain’t right.

  2. I was recently told “You have 20 minutes for a test drive” on a Mercedes that I had waited two weeks for a transfer on and it annoyed the crap out of me, so I’m glad to see the change, but surely there is a happy middle ground between 20 minutes and 24 hours. I’m already leery of used cars, especially the type of cars I go for, and knowing that random folks have had their way with the cars for 24 hours at a time is not something I’m thrilled about. I guess we’ll have to be even more vigilant in refreshing the site and try to catch them before they become short term rentals.
