Quick Hit – “The Most Polarizing Vehicle Ever at CarMax”

Regular blog readers know I’m not current on EVs and probably never will be. So I was surprised to get an email from a reader and car guru named Cannon giving me a heads-up on this Tesla Cybertruck unicorn – a $100,000 2024 pickup EV.

Cannon knows I have neither the time nor inclination to get smart on Cybertrucks, so he okayed me sharing what he wrote in his email. Pretty much, he said,

“This is the first Cybertruck I have seen them offer. It looks like the step down dual motor. It will be interesting to see how long they have it. Tesla just a few days ago dropped the Foundation series $20k premium to buy one. So the replacement cost from Tesla dropped to $80k. Can’t imagine a lot of folks will line up to buy this at $100k. I guess all it takes is one person though. The stainless doesn’t seem to age well. For a truck with 6k miles it looks dirty.”

Over the years, Cannon’s observations have been spot on. And the Cybertruck does look dirty. Here in Northern Virginia, Cybertrucks are not uncommon yet striking when spotted on our streets. I’m not a fan of the concept, but I have to applaud the boldness of the design. Visually, there is nothing like it on the road. I never noticed the giant single wiper until I clipped the photo above. The headlights are bizarre and severe.

The dash seems sparse and dull. I’d better be able to pull up Netflix on that tablet. I’m sure the dashboard is a work of art from a design point of view. The rest of the interior below looks more conventional.

I had no idea (duh) there was a storage bin under the hood, like a Boxster.

And the pickup bed is 6′. Looks conventional, too, under the cover.

By the way, Cannon also mentioned that CarMax has started selling Rivian’s, which I did not know. Started last spring. I’m a bit embarrassed to not have known that. Did I mention I’m not much of an EV guy?

You can track this 2024 Tesla Cybertruck here in Los Angeles, California. It’s a one-owner vehicle and is very much under Tesla’s warranty until 2028, at 50,000 miles. I have no position on whether MaxCare is right for EV’s, but it would only extend coverage by a year anyway. You have to wonder how much of a beating the owner took selling this car to CarMax, or whether it was a repossession? Enjoy.

I couldn’t help myself. My wife sent me the meme below long ago. If you’re a Cybertruck owner, forgive me.

I’m really not mocking the Cybertruck. I just needed the material.

But if I were spending $100,000 on an EV pickup, I think I’d go with the Rivian below now that I know they sell them. It’s freakish in a cool way and more traditional if you will.

And with the money left over from the Cybertruck, of course, I’d buy a Raptor!

Finally, I sing this song at every music gig I play. It seemed right here. Thanks again, Cannon, for the Cybertruck idea!

How High Will Gas Go? Unicorn Alternatives Until V-12’s Rule Again.

The world is going to hell in a handbasket. Because of the tragic Russian invasion of Ukraine, gas prices in the USA averaged $4.25 a gallon for regular and over $5.00 for diesel as I write. Fortunately my V-12 Mercedes S600 is in the shop for last minute repairs before I sell it. But we still gotta drive, right? Thought I’d put together a short list of cars I might be tempted to drive if I had to endure these prices long term. (Of course I say that as I prepare to pickup a 24 test drive of a BMW M3 V-8 this afternoon!) Unicorns? Only during these times.

Let’s start with an electric vehicle (EV), the controversial 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E SELECT. I’ve seen them on the road and the design doesn’t offend me, I just wish Ford hadn’t contaminated the Mustang brand on this EV. But since I drove a pitiful (borrowed) 1978 Mustang II with the 84 hp four-cylinder to my high school prom I guess I have little credibility here. Is is an SUV? A crossover? A car? Who cares. It’s electric! (Boogie, woogie, woogie)

The Mustang Mach-E Select has 266 hp and will do 0-60 mph in less than five seconds – not bad – and go maybe 270 miles on a charge. Middle of the pack EV performance. It’s fairly well equipped with auto cruise control and Apple Carplay. Car and Driver liked it so much they gave it an “Editors’ Choice” award. The car sold for maybe $50,000 new, and is now selling at a disappointing premium of $53,998 here in Potomac Mills, Virginia.

Next we have what I thought was the gold standard for EV’s, but don’t hold me to that – a 2018 Model 3 Long Range. CarMax today has 253 Teslas on the lots, ranging from $41,998 for a Standard Range model to $156,998 for a Model S Plaid rocket ship. I chose the 2018 below for no other reason than it was “reasonably” priced and a long range model. It’s similar in performance to the Mustang, albeit with a little less range (200 miles?!). Same with features.

The 2018 Tesla Model S Long Range rolled out to mixed reviews. Car and Driver noted the highs as “satisfying handling, impressive tech integration, looks and feels like the future.” The lows were “Not the price we were promised, not the range we were hoping for, the questionable build quality we’ve learned to expect.” This was probably a $56,000 car new, and is now $43,998 here in Kearny Mesa, California.

The Quickest Quick Hit – 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid

Haven’t written about EV’s except for this post about CarMax briefly experimenting selling them in 2018, and this one from spring 2021 when they started carrying them again. Mostly I don’t write about them because I no zilch about them, and I’m clinging to my search for another V-12. I’m just not credible, even though as of today CarMax has 232 Teslas on their lots. But blog reader Cannon shot me this 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid unicorn two weeks ago with a heads up that this car does 0-60 mph in sub two seconds. SUB TWO SECONDS! Makes it the quickest production car in the world. And a unicorn.

The Plaid model is crazy fast, and that performance cost $40,000 more than a regular S. Reviewers at Edmunds whined it’s not worth it and the car is mostly a one trick pony – only good for drag races. My hunch is since their test driver couldn’t match the sub-two of other testers they’re bitter. Other reviews boast that the Plaid lapped Nurburgring a good seven seconds faster than a Taycan, setting an EV record.

The Plaid has almost a 400 mile range. It’s fast and high tech and fully loaded. At $157,000 I’m not sure it’s a bargain. CarMax is offering the full 150,000 mile / five year MaxCare option. EV’s aren’t for me yet, but then I’m driving a 50 year old carbureted Fiat in my spare time! I’m sure before I have ceased to be an EV of some sort will fill my garage. Find this accident free, one owner wonder here at Dulles, Virginia.

Quick Hit – They’re Back! Teslas at CarMax.

As called by my bud at CarMax Teslas are back on the CarMax used car unicorn lot. Gave a heads up in this post in February and the first one showed up this week. As background, I posted about Teslas and CarMax in 2018 here but they vanished for a few years. In 2018 they were offered in California only and should be available nationwide soon. Thanks to reader Cannon for alerting me to this one while I’m driving cross country! (Update below.)

The Tesla dash was once space age, but with everyone bolting iPads to the dash not so much anymore.
Makes me want to eat Oreos. Or Pandas.

I wanted to make some funny ha-ha joke about what’s under the hood of a Tesla, but it looks a lot like my 911.

I honestly don’t know what to write about Teslas. It’s electric? I’m the guy who writes way too much about V-8’s and owns a V-12. Gas powered cars will sunset about the same time I do. Clearly they are the future. I’m hoping to get details on MaxCare options for this Tesla soon. For now, find this one owner, accident free car here in Palmdale, California.

Tesla Returning to CarMax?

Just got word from a well intentioned but not yet validated kindred CarMax guy (sorry for all the qualifiers) that CarMax intends to resume offering Teslas. I stumbled on CarMax Teslas almost three years ago and posted this blog piece, but not much into electric cars and lost interest. When my friend called me about CarMax carrying cars again I acted all seasoned and wise and pointed out my blog piece from 2018, as if I knew what I was talking about. The young man said well yeah, they used to offer them in California only but now it would be nationwide. Humbled. Hope to learn more about MaxCare options for Teslas soon.

So I dug deeply into this tonight, meaning I Googled it. Found this Business of Business website that explored the Tesla-CarMax relationship in this piece, and this piece. If you read them you’ll learn that CarMax once had over 300 Teslas for sale after I wrote my 2018 blog, and by late 2019 CarMax slammed the gullwing door on selling these cars. We’ll ignore that if you read these pieces you’ll know I REALLY am not a serious journalist. I’ve said it before though – I’d pay good money to have coffee or drinks with the CarMax guru who decides what cars to sell and what to avoid. Still curious on Alfa’s, Acura NSX, and Nissan GTR’s! I do know that CarMax sells over 700,000 cars a year, and must have incredible analytics on what’s working and what’s not. If I didn’t think it would affect my credibility even just a little bit, I’d be buying CarMax stock.

Well This is New! CarMax Now Carrying Used Teslas

2017 Tesla Model S 90DNot often does CarMax add a brand.  Last one was Genesis as a Hyundai spin-off.  Before that Fiat.  And no Alfa Romeos yet (waiting for a cut-rate Giulia Quadrifoglio!).  But today I spotted a new one, the first Tesla, and now a second one on the CarMax website – both in Irvine, California and non-transferable.  Did a Google search and the Tesla owner forum is a buzz – they misunderstood that CarMax has a partnership with Tesla to sell new ones.  Not so.  Just another used car.  They’re not happy.  Will be interesting to see what the MaxCare warranty costs.  Will work on that soon.  Find the cars at these links: 2015 Tesla Model S85D and 2017 Tesla Model S90D,2017 Tesla Model S 90D $87,998 6k Irvine CA2015 Tesla Model S 85D $64,998 45k Irvine CA
